We Need to Talk About Energy Drinks

Are you always tired? Your body is trying to tell you something.

Someone recently posted about their “energy drink problem” on LinkedIn. But the problem they mentioned wasn’t the daily dependence, poor sleep, or nervous system overload—it was that the empty cans were piling up on their desk.

That’s how normalized this has become. The addiction isn’t even questioned. The clutter is.

This is exactly what’s wrong with how we talk about health. We’re managing symptoms while ignoring the root problem. Energy drinks are one of the most accepted, marketed, and socially encouraged addictions out there despite wrecking people’s hormones, metabolism, and sleep.

But this isn’t just a health problem. It’s a spiritual one.

Energy Drinks Don’t Give You Energy

Let’s be clear: caffeine doesn’t create energy. It hijacks your nervous system and forces your body to respond with stress hormones—mainly cortisol and adrenaline. You feel more alert, but it’s not real fuel. It’s borrowed energy, and it always comes with a crash.

“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—
for He grants sleep to those He loves.”
– Psalm 127:2

God designed us to rest. To recharge. To live in rhythm with His creation. But energy drinks are a way of pushing past those limits. They help us avoid listening to the very body God gave us to steward.

Why You’re Actually Tired

The problem isn’t caffeine. The problem is what your body is trying to compensate for.

Here’s what’s usually underneath the daily slump:

  • Poor sleep (or inconsistent circadian rhythm)

  • Ultra-processed food and blood sugar crashes

  • Little to no morning sunlight

  • Sedentary lifestyle

  • Mineral and magnesium depletion

  • Overstimulation and screen exposure

  • Chronic disobedience to how the body was designed to function

This isn’t just biology—it’s biblical design. God built your body with needs, patterns, and natural boundaries. The modern world trains us to override all of it. But Scripture reminds us that:

“You are not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.”
– 1 Corinthians 6:19–20

Your body doesn’t belong to hustle culture.
It doesn’t belong to your boss, your brand, or your to-do list.
It belongs to the Lord.

And He never asked us to run ourselves into the ground.

What Real Energy Looks Like

Energy isn’t something you borrow. It’s something you build through obedience, stewardship, and wisdom.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • ☀️ Morning sunlight – Your body runs on light. Get outside within 30 minutes of waking up to reset your rhythm.

  • 💤 Real sleep – Aim for 7–9 hours in a dark, cool room. Caffeine after noon and screens before bed sabotage the rest God wants you to have.

  • 🥩 Real food – Ditch the sugar, seed oils, and snacks. Eat full meals with protein and fat that support stable blood sugar and mitochondrial health.

  • 🚶‍♀️ Post-meal movement – Even a 10-minute walk can regulate energy better than any energy drink.

  • 🧂 Minerals + magnesium – These get burned out quickly under chronic stress. Replenish what you’ve lost.

These aren’t hacks. They’re habits rooted in the way God designed us to function.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
– Ecclesiastes 3:1

When you ignore those seasons, you burn out. When you return to them, you heal.

When Caffeine Becomes an Idol

This might sound extreme, but for many people, caffeine becomes a false savior. It replaces the peace of God with the stimulation of chemicals. It gives the illusion of control, strength, and performance—while the body continues to weaken underneath.

“You shall have no other gods before Me.”
– Exodus 20:3

What we rely on to get through the day reveals what we’re truly trusting in.
Is it God? Or is it convenience?

You Can Break Free

You don’t need to quit cold turkey tomorrow, but you do need to be honest with yourself. Are you running on rest and nourishment? Or on chemicals and stress?

The world will keep selling you energy.
God is offering you restoration.

Don’t settle for survival mode.
Don’t silence your body.
Don’t trade sacred stewardship for synthetic strength.

Your body is a temple. Treat it like one.
