Lexapro and the Illusion of Peace
Chemical calm isn't the same as spiritual peace.

We live in an overmedicated culture. It’s hard to find anyone not on Lexapro, Zoloft, or Prozac. We call it normal. Doctors call it “care.” But it’s really just chemical management of spiritual and metabolic dysfunction.
We’ve been sold the lie that serotonin equals peace, but a prescription can’t replace repentance.
The Illusion of Peace
Most people start taking it during a storm of loss, burnout, hormonal change, or exhaustion. The pill works fast enough to dull the noise, but it never resolves why the noise was there in the first place.
“They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace.”
— Jeremiah 6:14
We’ve done the same thing with our mental health. Instead of healing at the root, we’ve accepted temporary relief that leaves us disconnected from both God and ourselves.
What Lexapro Actually Does
Lexapro is an SSRI, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It traps serotonin in your synapses longer so you feel balanced. But serotonin isn’t a happiness switch; it’s a signal that depends on light, sleep, protein, and magnesium.
If those foundations are broken, trapping serotonin just causes chaos.
Common side effects tell the story:
Fatigue or sluggishness
Emotional numbness or apathy
Insomnia or restless sleep
Carbohydrate cravings and weight gain
Digestive slowdown
Decreased libido and motivation
So even though the “experts” claim that “Lexapro helps you feel normal,” many end up numb, tired, craving sugar, and detached from purpose. Obviously, that’s not healing.
The Root Problem Isn’t Chemical
The real epidemic isn’t serotonin deficiency. It’s order deficiency.
👉 Anxiety and depression are often symptoms of deeper misalignment, both physically and spiritually.
👉 When we live out of rhythm with creation by sleeping too little, eating fake food, and avoiding sunlight, our biology breaks down.
👉 When we live out of alignment with God’s Word by neglecting prayer, community, and obedience, our spirit follows.
Peace requires submission to God’s design, not manipulation of brain chemistry.
“Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.”
— Proverbs 3:7–8
That’s the real prescription: obedience that brings biochemical order.
The False Savior
The world says, “You don’t need to change your habits, just take this magic pill.” That’s the gospel of Big Pharma: peace without repentance.
They offer comfort instead of correction. They teach people to numb the signal instead of fixing the system. But numbness isn’t freedom. It’s bondage with a smile.
“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
Christ calls us to reorder our lives under His authority so our bodies, minds, and souls can not only heal, but thrive.
The Way Back to True Healing
If you’re taking Lexapro, this isn’t condemnation. It’s an invitation to look deeper.
There are seasons when medication may serve as a temporary mercy, but it should never become a master.
I see this often in women in midlife: fatigue, low drive, and poor sleep dismissed as “depression,” when it’s really hormonal chaos, malnutrition, and spiritual depletion.
Here’s how we begin to rebuild the temple step by step:
Sleep with the sun — restore your circadian rhythm.
Eat like Eden — real food, God-made, not lab-made.
Move daily — strength and circulation change brain chemistry naturally.
Pray and repent — confess what’s been numbing you spiritually.
Get sunlight — less screen glow, more sunlight.
Healing comes when we live as we were created to live.
Restoration, Not Medication
Your body is crying for restoration, not medication.
Lexapro might numb the pain, but only Christ can heal the reason it hurts.
That kind of peace doesn’t come from a pharmacy. It comes from obedience.
If you’re ready to heal the root cause of your anxiety, fatigue, or mood struggles by returning to God’s design for the body, book a complimentary discovery call with me today. That’s what I help people do: rebuild metabolism, restore rhythm, and renew faith in the process.
When the time is right in your healing journey, we can talk about how to ask your doctor about tapering safely, with wisdom and confidence. But for now, the goal is simple: rebuild your temple, and let God restore what the culture has broken.

Always talk to your doctor before making any changes to your medication or treatment plan. My goal is to help you rebuild the foundation of health that makes true healing possible, not to replace your physician.
